SAN ANTONIO -- A racially-incendiary political flyer distributed in at least one San Antonio-area Catholic Church has prompted the Texas Nationalist Movement to call on The Most Reverend Gustavo Garcia-Siller, the Archbishop of San Antonio, to denounce the flyer and remind parish priests of their own church's guidelines during election season.
A parishioner at St. Luke's Catholic Church in San Antonio contacted TNM President Daniel Miller with a scanned copy of a flyer received following services on church grounds. The flyer, which purports to be sponsored by a number of Democrat and progressive Latino organizations, states that Republicans believe "Medicare should be eliminated", "Brown people need an ID to vote," and other polarizing claims dealing with voting integrity, illegal immigration and social services. The back of the flyer contains a list of 2012 Democratic candidates.
"This is being generated by radical, progressive Latino organizations and is being distributed at Catholic churches around San Antonio," the parishioner told Miller.
Miller said that TNM is less concerned about which party's partisans were distributing the flyers than it is with the content.
"We don't care whether it's Democrat or Republican. We're a non-partisan organization. Our opposition to this is that it's race-baiting, using the cover of the church to give it the appearance of legitimacy," Miller said from his Nederland headquarters. "It is an over-the-top, racist hit piece that advocated positions that fly in the face of Article 1, Section 1 of the Texas Constitution and attacks the freedom and independence of the people of Texas. It is an attack, not on the Republican Party, but on the sovereignty of Texas."
Miller said the Archbishop could send a strong message to politicians of all stripes, as well as his own priests.
"We call on the Archbishop to publicly denounce this attempt at race baiting ," Miller said. "This flyer serves only to further polarize people on issues of sovereignty and race."
The flyer was distributed by the "Get Out the Hispanic Vote Initiative" and sponsored by Bexar County Tejano Democrats, Mission Democrats of Bexar County, the Cesar E. Chavez Legacy and Educational Foundation, Proud Democrats of San Antonio, and the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement.
"We call on those organizations to issue a public apology to the citizens of Texas for thinking we would not see this for what it is, a racist piece of progressive propaganda," Miller said.
Below is the flyer in question.
