When England ruled the colonies, the tyranny was controlled by troops in red coats. It was a simple strategy of exceptional might against a bunch of colonists armed with rudimentary weapons. Nothing complicated, just might makes right, as it were. Similar issues existed in the battle between Texas and Mexico.
Mexico had the superior firepower and it was fairly simple to control the colonists. The battle lines in both instances were fairly straightforward; the bad guys had big guns and the impoverished knew they had to take up arms of any kind and use whatever was at their disposal to physically fight their enemy. Cut and dried. It could not be simpler to understand.
Today, however, we seem to have become more sophisticated (or at least believe ourselves to be) and the issues have been obscured by misguided professors, politicians, the news media and witless Hollywood performers. The obfuscations of these people are far more dangerous and insidious than the blunt force of a bullet and much harder to fight against. Someone with a rifle is easy to identify as your enemy, whereas a smiling, seemingly benevolent individual who seduces the public with misinformation is not. We, the American public, have become so conditioned to believe and look up to our leaders to handle our affairs that it is difficult for most to understand that we are really on our own. Many people I talk to (including some of my own family) believe that once a new President comes into office, everything will be OK again. Make no mistake; this is a tougher battle than one using guns. Lots of smart people have been seduced by the golden draw of DC, including our former governor, Rick Perry, who I really believe was true to Texas at one time. Talking, teaching, preaching and writing are the weapons of today and ours need to be stronger, more intelligent and above all, make more sense to our fellow Texans than those of the enemy.
