Unfortunately, I believe we know the answer to that question. They say that history repeats itself and it is interesting to note that Governor Perry has asked the Federal Government for three hundred fifty million dollars to cover the costs of protecting Texas. I have no doubt that not only doesn't Governor Perry expect a payment, but is using this as a mere campaign prop.
It is interesting, however, to note that in 1861, The Texas Secession convention met and adopted an Ordinance of Secession. A major issue that concerned the convention was the demand that the Federal Government reimburse Texas for the costs of protecting itself from Indians as well as bandits from Mexico, since the Federal Government provided no help at all. The Federal Government's refusal to pay the bill was cited as a main reason for Secession.
The Texans who drafted the first Ordinance of Secession were strong, independent people; the kind of people we need to look up to; the kind of people we need to become again. We DO have it within us to accomplish our goals and must join arms with our fellow Texans to help each other regain our heritage.
