There is passionate yearning for freedom in all dependent peoples. Just in the last 20 years, there have been 14 countries declaring their independence - East Timor (Timor-Leste), Montenegro, Serbia, South Sudan, Kosovo, South Ossetia, Abkhazia, Azawad, Bosnia, Herzegovina, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Eritrea and Palau. Scotland and Texas are intending to join those ranks. The desire and passion of both are for the same reasons. Both know continued existence of their ties with present governing entities prevent the development of international economic co-operation, impedes the social, cultural and economic development of their citizens.
Scotland has been part of the United Kingdom for over 300 years just as Texas has been part of the United States since 1845. For most of Scotland's ties with the United Kingdom, they have had a faction seeking independence so Scotland can once again become a nation.
They are losing their language, music and culture due to assimilation of British English and culture. Texas has always had it's own culture and language that are also being lost through assimilation of not only the United States, but foreign countries as well. The Scottish National party is gaining new momentum just as the Texas Nationalist Movement is growing our ranks daily. One of the signs of renewed growth in Scotland is the revival of music in the Gaelic language and music is being used to rally the "stand up and fight" for their language and culture as exemplified by the song, "Let's Work Together".
An election revived the drive for independence in Scotland just as we are hoping an election will strengthen our own drive toward the same goal of independence from the US. Scotland has a strong economy that would enable it to thrive if it was no longer paying taxes to the Queen. Texas has an even stronger economy and can also thrive on its own. especially if we no longer pay taxes to the Federal Government
As Alex Salmond, the first minister and SNP leader in Scotland said, "Power to the people is fundamental." The Texas Constitution of 1876 says,
"ARTICLE I.
Bill of Rights.
That the general, great and essential principles of liberty and free government may be recognized and established, we declare:
...
SEC. 2. All political power is inherent in the people and all free governments are founded on their authority, and instituted for their benefit. The faith of the people of Texas stands pledged to the preservation of a republican form of government, and, subject to this limitation only, they have at all times the inalienable right to alter, reform or abolish their government in such manner as they may think expedient."
The justification for both Scottish and Texas independence is they both have a right to be nations. Sam Houston told us the day would come when "Texas will once again lift its head and stand among the nations." Scotland is preparing a referendum for Fall of 2014. I pray Texas does not wait that long.
