Feds Overstep to Control family Farms
Texas is home to nearly a quarter million privately owned and operated farms, producing everything from cattle to cotton, that cover near 80% of the lands in Texas. Texas is the number one producer of livestock and the number four in general crops produced in the United States. I could fill a book with the facts about Texas agriculture, but you don't need to know much to know the negative effects of the proposed U.S. Department of Transportation rule/bill requiring all operators of agricultural equipment to acquire a commercial driver's license.
The pending rule is simply one the latest gross oversteps by the tyrannical U.S. government. At the top, they don't comprehend or care that farming and ranching is a family business. A long way down the political line, rural area representatives are outraged, but the only result has been the public comment period has been extended to August 1st.
I personally began really contributing to my family ranch at the ripe ol' age of seven. My 83 year old grandfather still hops on a tractor to this day. The roots of family farms take a long time to develop, and they last a lifetime for those that come up working their family lands. The equipment on the farm is an extension of the family, though the days of "mule and plow production" are long gone. How do the youth on the family farm contribute to the workload if they are prohibited by law from operating anything used to be a productive agricultural business?
As Jefferson said, "Were we directed from Washington when to sow, & when to reap, we should soon want bread."
