The famous dust bowl began in the Panhandle area in 1934 with twenty-two dust storms rising as high as a mile and continued with forty more in 1935 and seventy-two in 1936. In 1937 they subsided and rain returned to Texas. Since this was during the depression, the adverse weather that destroyed farms and lives, forced many people to take refuge in working as migrant workers in California, if they could get work. Help from the Federal Government at that time was negligible and the tent cities, better known as "Hoovervilles" began to flourish. The "New Deal" that emerged with the Roosevelt administration was too little, too late, for most and it, of course, led the way to the welfare state we know today.
It is interesting (albeit unpleasant) to compare those times with today. Texas is suffering the worst draught it has seen in recent history and farming as well as the cattle industry again is taking a belly-punch and the economy isn't faring much better. Agra-industry is extremely important to Texas and will become even more so in the days ahead, just as the oil industry serves as the lifeline for much of Texas industry. These are the kinds of issues a serious Governor should address, but as Apostle Claver recently told us, these people are politicians, not servants of the people, as they have promised to be. A serious servant of the people would work to get the Federal EPA out of Texas business and perhaps work with the farmers and landowners to help orchestrate / create rights-of-way and partnerships to pump water from the many rivers and aquifers in Texas. Sounds simple enough; why can't it be? The fish and wildlife need not be adversely affected. The same goes for the oil industry. Let's be safe, but for heaven's sake, let's not tie it up in extraneous BS, compromises, counter-deals and other political crap. Sounds naïve, doesn't it? That is because we have been conditioned to believe everything must be more complicated to insure positions of power that are pervasive throughout our governments. Apostle Claver says to throw out the politicians and put everyday people, like ourselves in office. It sounds like a plan; will we do it? Will those who are capable step forward? Will we support them? These are questions I ask myself; these are questions that EVERYONE needs to ask themselves.
