When you set off on the path to achieve Texas independence you initially feel "ten feet tall and bulletproof". Then the critics come out.
We live in a world where the internet has turned everyone into an armchair "expert", "analyst" and "commentator". That wouldn't be so bad if they actually were experts, their analysis was based on known facts and their comments were more than grammatically poor ramblings.
Whether it's your co-workers, your friends, your family, your neighbors or the media, I can guarantee you one thing. You will be criticized for wanting and working for Texas independence.
How you handle the criticism will determine whether or not you will be in this fight for the long-haul. How many "you can'ts" can you handle before you throw in the towel and send in a change of address card to a new home on Washout Road?
Chris Guillebeau at The Art of Non-Conformity blog has put together a very good guide on how to constructively deal with critics. It's easy to say "to hell with them" but it's not the easiest thing to do. He has put together a practical guide for adopting a mindset and action plan for those rotten critics.
The bottom line according to Chris:
{jb_quote}In short, you'll usually hear a lot of excuses even when you succeed. It's the classic sign of a critic, and rare is the person who calls you up and says, "You know, I was wrong about that. Good job." Instead, you'll usually have more of the same complaints, except then you'll know that recognition from the critics is not a reward worth seeking. Just let it go, and live the life you want. {/jb_quote}
Keep pressing on for the Lone Star regardless of what they say but learn how to deal with them.
